Select the Perfect Carpet
Carpet can be tricky to shop for because it is very difficult for the average shopper to tell the quality just by looking at it. There are many “hidden” properties that contribute to the overall quality of the carpet. All of the characteristics of the carpet must be understood and taken into consideration to truly determine the quality.
Carpeting provides the background for your decor. It is the element which coordinates the furniture, walls and floors in your room. The task of choosing the right color can seem daunting. Samples offer an endless array of colors. Finding the perfect color doesn’t need to be confusing if you consider certain elements in your room.
These are a few things you should check while buying the carpet. They are as follows:
Colour variation
Select a color to complement your local climate. If you live in a warm climate, decorating with a cool palette can create the illusion of a cooler space. Cool colors include blue, gray and green. A warm palette can increase the temperature of your room visually. Choose from shades of yellow, red, orange, and earth tones.
Remember your carpet will be a major component in your room for several years. Select a color which will look as fresh in five years as it does when it is installed. Bold, trendy colors such as mango, bright red or pink can be initially appealing, but consider how will it look in the future if your decor is updated. Use trendy colors for accessories rather than for a large expanse of carpeting. Classic colors are usually a better choice.
Appearance change
Carpet will gradually change in appearance over time due to normal use and fading from exposure to ultra violet radiation from sunlight. While sunlight is the most common cause of fading, household chemicals can also contribute to change in colour. Similarly, high temperature and humidity conditions may accelerate the onset of fading. The Carpet Institute recommends that carpet be protected from sunlight by use of shading devices such as window reflective films, curtains, awnings and blinds.
Face Weight
Weight is an indicator of density, as it is measured by square foot. The higher the weight, the more fibers per square foot, and the more dense and durable the carpet.Unfortunately, face weight has been so heavily marketed that many consumers are given the impression that it is the best way to determine a carpet’s durability.
Carpet Density
Carpet density refers to how close together the fibers are tufted (stitched) into the carpet backing. It is calculated using a specific formula. When comparing carpets that have different densities, but are equivalent in all other ways (same fiber type, style, etc.) then a higher density value indicates a more durable carpet.
Fiber Twist
Many carpets are made using a twist technique, in which the fibers are twisted to increase durability and structure. Carpets with a higher twist per inch (TPI) will stand up to matting or flattening, making them more durable.
Size
Consider the size of your room. Create the illusion of a larger room with a light, solid color carpet. It can make your room feel open and airy. Medium or deep colors can make a large room feel more intimate and cosy.
Professional fitting for a professional finish
Successfully laying a carpet requires considerable skill. A poorly fitted carpet is more vulnerable to damage and spoils the appearance of the entire room. For the best results, it’s always worth using a professional carpet-fitting service. You can rely on our expert teams to lay your carpet efficiently and flawlessly. Our fitters are all fully trained and committed to a high standard of work. Choose the best material for your needs
Today’s carpets are made from different kinds of material: wool, man-made fibres, Nylon, Acrylic and Polyester. Each one has particular qualities and benefits.
Wool carpets
Wool is the most commonly used natural carpet material, with many alluring qualities that make it so popular. Wool is completely natural, super soft, flame-resistant, and great at hiding dirt. High-quality wool is elastic and durable, which makes it great for high-traffic areas.
Wool carpets are truly luxurious and will enhance the elegance of any living room. They’re wonderful to walk on and durable. Wool is an excellent insulator and so will keep your living room warm and reduce noise. Wool carpets are destined to impress; for example, Kersaint Cobb pure wool carpets are sourced in Europe and New Zealand for a stylish appearance and sumptuous feel.
Man-made carpets
Man-made carpets are attractive and hardwearing. If you have young children or pets and therefore require high-performance living room carpet, a man-made blend is ideal. It can cope with heavy footfall, dirt, and spillages.
Nylon
Nylon is the most popular synthetic carpet material due to its durability and versatility. The flexibility of nylon allows the material to be used in a variety of different carpet patterns and styles, from ultra-plush to dense and tightly packed.
Acrylic
Acrylic was originally used as a wool substitute, giving you the look of wool for a lower cost. Acrylic is stain-resistant and easy to clean, fade-resistant, and water-repellent. Acrylic, however, is less durable than wool and can become fuzzy over time due to wear and tear.
Polyester
Polyester is extremely stain and fade-resistant and less expensive than other synthetic carpet types. If you choose polyester carpeting, opt for a well-constructed option, with a higher weight and density to ensure that it holds up over time.
